I was experimenting with some designs once and used a block of douglas fir. Using a graphite neck and EMGs, it sang with an open voice, articulating the highs while providing low end and good sustain. The old IBM stock circuit board for a pickguard was purely nostalgic, and copper complimented the golden chestnut-brown of the fir. Both fretted and fretless work well with these combinations.A word from Jeff Davis:
Musician, craftsman, sound sculptor, Harris G. Thor can imagine a sound and then replicate it in wood, steel and electronics. His instruments are painstakingly crafted with individual personalities and a genuine depth of soul. His amplification and sound reinforcement systems empower rather than overwhelm.
Give H.G. an idea -- a sound-- and he will give you an instrumental voice that really lets your musical personality sing.
I'm an electric bassist who often finds himself playing in acoustic situations. I asked him to build me fretted and fretless instruments that would suggest the body and warmth of an upright, yet pack the punch of a P-Bass for rock, R & B, and the blues.
His fir-bodied basses with Moses Graphite necks and EMG pickups come incredibly close to singing the sounds I carry around in my head. The craftsmanship is superb; the playability, exceptional. And, to my eye, the appearance of each bass is subtle yet stunning.
I also own and play an HG Thor guitar capable of conjuring an amazing array of sounds and musical personalities. If it were possible, I would fill my music room with instruments made by Harris G. Thor.
